| The Nicholas County Potato Festival began as a way to showcase our local potato growers and the importance of agriculture in Nicholas County. A premier small town festival, the Nicholas County Potato Festival has been described as, "Americana at it's best". The last several years has seen the festival evolve into a 3 day event that includes: a kids evening, mashed potato eating contest, potato decorating contest, potato auction, tractor show, pet pageant, car show, craft and food vendors and a lot more. Individuals and local organizations set up items ranging from baked goods to crafts, and raffles. Saturday is our "Grand Day" which begins with a 5k Run, mid-day features the Grand Parade and the day ends with great entertainment. This tradition has continued for 41 years thanks to the work of the City of Summersville, Summersville CVB, Summersville Lions Club. |

| The maze is a living, growing series of twists and turns that allows participants to navigate their way through a cornfield design eight acres in size.
Maze goers use a passport full of clues to ensure correct passage. A wrong answer will send you in the wrong direction which adds up to more fun.
Average time for daytime completion is 1 hour. In the nighttime, that time increases and so does the fun. Tents are available for parties, a fire for hot dogs and marshmallows, kiddie rides, cornhole and other activities.
Oct. 22, 23, 29, 30 - the maze transforms into the Field of Screams. Times tba.
We are located conveniently along I-64 in Milton, behind the old Milton Middle School. |

| Four private Washington Family homes in Jefferson County, WV will be open to visitors on Saturday, September 18, 10am – 5pm, presented by the Friends of Happy Retreat. This year’s tour offers a rare opportunity to see Happy Retreat, the gracious 1780 home of Charles Washington, Charles Town’s founder and George Washington’s youngest brother; Harewood, the 1770 estate of George’s oldest brother Samuel; Beallair, built in the 1790s, and expanded by Lewis Washington in 1850; and Claymont Court, the 1840 mansion built by the president’s grand-nephew Bushrod Corbin Washington. Advance tickets are $20 for the tour, or $10 per home. On the day of the tour, the cost is $25, and single- admission tickets are $10.
Every American knows that George Washington was a general in the American Revolution and our nation’s first president. His famous home Mount Vernon, a national treasure, receives a constant stream of heritage visitors. Yet few know the story of George’s younger years, and his and his family’s settlement in the rich lands between the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers – now known as Jefferson County, West Virginia. The Washington family built at least 10 estates in Jefferson County, but not all remain.
The homes on this tour are private historic residences. They are not handicapped accessible, and not all rooms will be open to the public. |
